Canadian markets

I currently cover Candian markets as a reporter for MarketWatch, a digital arm of Dow Jones Newswires. Typically the market is bolstered by the metals and energy sectors, which are propelled by oil and metals futures. But next week Canada’s top five banks will be reporting earnings. Often financial stocks can throw a wrench into Toronto’s stock index. When Manulife Financial Corp., Canada’s biggest insurer, cut its dividend in half, Toronto stocks tumbled. That move injected fear into investor sentiment when it comes to Canadian banks. But analysts are saying that fiscal third quarter results won’t spook the markets too much as trading revenue likely softened the banks profit declines in the most recnt quarter.
